Before I started messing with it, I could press "black" (no color)
button on my printer and it would open a window of options. One was
to load the software that came with the printer, but there were a
couple of others.

I accidentally set the default action to another selection. Now when
I press the button nothing happens. How can I set it back to
prompting me again?

running, what printer, what printer drivers, etc.

I am using XP sp2.

My printer is a Canon PIXMP 780. I don't really know what drivers I
am using. The ones that came with the printer.

The program I intended to assign the "black" button to is called MP
Navigator 1.0.

I am really not sure what the actual function I did assign the key to
was.

I am not familiar with this product or software. However, you might want to
update your software to the latest version 1.04.

In Windows XP you can go into My Computer and rt-click on the scanner to
bring up properties ( the 780 is a multifunctional machine and some button
assignments are found under the scanner section), select the events tab,
then select the event assignment and then the action preferred. Hope this

When I select scanner from the control panel and pick scanners,
nothing is listed.

When I pick printers there is one for the Canon printer and there is
another one for Canon fax.

I don't see an event tab for the printer.

Terry, when you select what to print, under File, hit Print button. It
should then go to the 2nd choice>> http://i13.tinypic.com/4bjm62c.jpg <<
and then choose Properties, it should give you several 'Tabs of Choice'.
Choose Color tab, then "grayscale(black), then Apply/OK. HTH, s

This info is from Canon support. If you can't get to the event selection
mentioned by them and by me, uninstall and reinstall. This may be the best
time to update the drivers. Also, if you recently ran the MS update there
is
a scripting problem in the Canon software and may have been removed by
Windows malicious software remover (there is an alert on the Canon support
website).

Scanning with the operation panel
MP Navigator starts and allows you to specify the advanced settings for
scanning documents from this machine by pressing the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button.

If MP Navigator does not start automatically when the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button is pressed, make appropriate setting on the Scanners
and Cameras screen to start up MP Navigator.

In Windows XP, the first time you press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start
button, the program selection dialog box is displayed.

1.. Place the document face-down on the platen glass. You can also load
documents face-up in the ADF.


2.. Press the <Scan> button. The machine switches to scan mode.


3.. Press the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button. MP Navigator will
start.

Setting the scanning method for the <Color> Start or <Black> Start button.

You can change the behavior resulting from pressing the <Color> Start or
<Black> Start button as follows

1.. Click the Windows 'Start' button then click 'Control Panel'
(Non-Windows XP: click the 'Start' button then click 'Settings' , 'Control
Panel').


2.. In the open window, click 'Printers and Other Hardware', then click
'Scanners and Cameras' (non-Windows XP: Double-click 'Scanners and
Cameras').

Just guessing it might be beneficial to know which printer is being
referred to?

Does the software not offer you a default option, which would return it
to the original state?

If not, you may need to uninstall and reinstall it.
