Can a DV camera and a external hard drive use a firewire card at the
same time?

The short answer is yes, but some have reported that capturing DV to a
HD *on the same 1394 cable/port* resulted in dropped frames ... and
some have also reported that simply moving either the HD or DV cam to
a different 1394 port (some cards have more than one 1394 port) cured
the problem.

FireWire = 1394 = iLINK

This is apparently a chipset/driver related problem, which manifests in
certain 1394 chipsets.

Believe iLink is a subset protocol standard of IEEE 1394, SBP-2. And, was
developed by Sony. So saying one equals the other is a bit inaccurate.
Hardware-wise are identical.
