I was just curious to see if I could lay all the files from my windows
xp disk to: letter:/windows xp/setup.exe. Also would this be ok to do
from Microsoft end user agreement? My theory is installation will be
faster than installing from the CD-ROM. TIA

yes and no:

first off, to initiate the installation the correct command is winnt (not
setup)

the file system must be fat32 and you'd need to convert to NTFS once the OS
is installed

another point is assuming you start from a win98 boot floppy ...you will
need to load smartdrv before you start the installation

you can simply have smartdrv on your floppy and execute the command
smartdrv prior to running the command winnt


if you do not load smartdrv, the installation will take *many* hours and
there is a good chance it will fail entirely...

so do yourself a favor and install XP in the "usual" way
and simply boot with your XP cd

Windows XP: Installing from Harddrive -

By the time you go through this entire procedure, you could already have
XP installed the normal way by booting from the CD and installing
directly. I also doubt there would be any significant difference in the
speed of the install this way. The XP installation from CD is much
faster than the days of Win9x, where installing from the hard drive did
make a difference in the speed of installation.

I agree with philo....do yourself a favor and just boot from the CD and
install that way.

You could BUT it is an exercise in futility and a waste of time and resource. You be
much better and faster to go directly from the CD for your setup
