I have been playing an online game and been banned (the reasons will remain
my secret - perhaps!)
The administrators of the game (self appointed, no democracy) claim they
have banned my IP address.

My question is this: how can they find my IP address when I run Zone Alarm
and besides, I thought I would register a different IP address on each
login? I am concerned about this because I wonder if there is a "hole" that
hackers can get into.

I use an ISDN dial up connection (128kpbs for those non UK readers) and XP
Home.

Any tips on bypassing this ban I'm under would also be gratefully received,
oh in that case I'd better tell you why I got banned! I swore a bit after
getting drunk and beaten! Now I've apologised, so don't any of you (Yes Kim
Kuttral!) come back and get all self righteous on me! Besides which, there
shouldn't have been anyone on there under 13 years, ie an adult in todays
terms!

They may not be banning by IP address but by game serial number and/or game
nickname.

Also, they may be banning the series of IP addresses that your Internet
service provider may be using. So, in fact they are banning everyone who
uses your ISP, not just you.

Private property and democracy can't and don't mix... They own the
equipment your connecting too, they naturally have all power.

Your IP address is known everytime you connect to another machine, other
wise the remote machine wouldn't know the address to end data back to.

No,there's no "hole". The server your machine is talking to HAS to know
your ip, or it wouldn't work. Every server you play on has your IP recorded
in their logs.

Now, you say but I don't have static IP, I have DHCP, and don't I supposedly
get a new address every time I boot up/log on? Nope. Odds are, your ISP has
their IP leases set to two weeks, so you continuously get the same IP every
time you log on, unless you log off for more than two weeks straight. (And,
even then sometimes you get the same number back if the server hasn't given
it to someone else.)

Basically, if they're banning by each IP, you're screwed. Even if you
switch computers, if you're only allowed a single IP from the ISP, you're
going to get the exact same number again.

Tough break. Time to find another server. I would avoid swearing in the
future, if I were you. :-)

use ipconfig and renew your IP. that might give you a different IP
depending on your ISP.

It still has to know your IP address, the NAT would then just work out what
machine made the request and forward the packet on, from the outside there
is no difference.

They administer a private server. They have every right to do anything they
want there.

You have to connect to the server to play. They probably log the IP address
from there - firewall or not, that address *must* be reachable. By playing
the game, you've given the firewall permission to let that traffic through.

Talk to the admins. They may want you to stay off for a while to "cool your
heels" before letting you back on, they may not want you on at all... every
server is different.
