No, it's not a "however you like" kind of thing. Metadata properties stored
within the file type still apply. Different file types support different
metadata properties.

Hello,

With Vista I see this new heading column named "Tags". So I'm assuming that
you can come up with Tag Names and assign them to files how every you'd
like, but I can't seem to figure out how to do so. When I click properties
of a file (say MPEGs, AVIs, MP3s or even pictures) I don't have the option
available for "Tags" anywhere.

And on some file types I have seen "Ratings" in the file properties, but it
was greyed and so I
couldn't assign a rating to the file.

How do these functions work?

Proceed at your own risk

Open Windows Explorer. Click Organize/Folder and Search Options. In the
Tasks section, select the "Show preview and filters" option.

Now open a folder that contains media (pictures, video, etc) files. Select a
file and at the bottom of the window you will see the options that can be
changed. Click to the right of an option such as Tags to delete or enter
text.

Note: Not all options can be selected or changed, this depends on where the
file came from and how it was created.

Jeff ... there is a neat little add-in for Windows called Microsoft Photo
Info. It can be run on XPSP2 (with .NET Runtime 2.0) or Vista. You can view
or edit photo metadata from Windows Explorer by using the right-click
context menu. It does other neat stuff, too. I found it when I was just
browsing around at download.microsoft.com ...

You might want to see if that would be something useful ...
