I'm using Windows XP(automatically updated so I've got the latest version)
and have started a defrag and now need to use the computer (which won't be
finished with the defrag for about five hours, I recokon, based on how far
it's gotten up to nnow). Can I pause it? Can I cancel it? What will be the
consequences of either action. Thanks very much for your help.

Hello,

Yes you can pause or stop it. There is no consequence other than that
defragmentation is not fully complete, but what has been defragged will
remain. So if you need to pause or stop it, go ahead.

when you pause and
cancel, no files thereafter
will be defragged.

it then cancel it.

You can pause it by clicking the "Pause" button. You can stop it by clicking
the "Stop" button.

If you pause defrag, go about your business on the PC for awhile, defrag
will briefly examine if anything it already defragged has changed enough for
a total startover. If that is true, it will startover. Otherwise, it will
continue where it left off.

If you cancel defrag, go about your business on the PC. Nothing should
happen. The next time you start defrag, it will examine the partition just
as before and take action on it if you want the partition defragmented.

You should run the defrag program and let it do its duty in full on a
regular basis. You should defragment the windows partition often after
you've cleaned it up. You should clean the windows partition often.
