I'm trying to learn Windows Moviemaker. I made a kind of slideshow last
night, but now, when I open the file, all the images have big red x's on
them. What happened?

Usually that means you deleted the files elswhere so movie maker can't find
them. If you didn't delete them, but moved their location, double click on
the x's and browse for their new location to help it find them.
