I have windows 2000 and IE 6. My IE icon properties show that the target is
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE". When I open my browser
using the IE icon, I expect to see a IEXPLORE.EXE task but when I look at
the task manager and check what process is behind the IE application, I find
explorer.exe. Why is it not creating a IEXPLORE.EXE process for my IE icon?
How do I get my IE icon to run IEXPLORE.EXE instead of explorer.exe?

Have you tried an IE Repair?
It's likely that your associations for file types is corrupted somehow.

If that doesn't help, to give us something to look at try the following
commands in a command window and capture their results:

assoc .exe

ftype | findstr /i "exefile explorer\."

BTW this is slightly off-topic for this newsgroup. You may find better
assistance in a newsgroup which specializes in your OS.
