CAN SOMEONE HELP ME??? Cannot start explorer.exe or iexplorer.exe

HELP!!!
My Computer (Win XP Professional) cannot start Windows
Explorer or Internet Eplorer. The message:

"<process ended> Has performed an illegal operation and
will be closed by Windows."

... Appears in a dialog box, and that is it. So I cannot
use the computer for much. I had the same problem under
Win2000 Pro, and upgrading to Win Xp did not help.
