You can't show the contents of a mail folder and the calendar simultaneously
in the same window.

True. But one can enable the Reading Pane in the Calendar in 2007.

But I suspect it was in the viewing of messages and calendar simultaneously
that the OP was interested.

I guess the only option for that, is "open in new window" and then "Tile
Windows"
