Can I share internet over a RS232 serial link from ADSL ?

Hi Mike;
Don't know about rs232 but if I was you I would just put a tee on the back
of the network card in PC2 and run some more coax to PC3 and what ever else
you want to hook up to it. Network cards with coax connecter are a dime a
dozen on Ebay as are 16 bit PCMCIA cards. Most are from surplus dealers and
are system pulls.

Hi all,

Heres the situation,

I have PC-1 which has ADSL in via USB and it also has a
coax network card which connects to PC-2 and internet
connection sharing works fine. The adsl modem is a
NB1300 which works fine, though the modem has to
power up first and initialise otherwise the DHCP
in PC-1 doesnt work properly - but this is a minor
issue... ADSL is linked at 256Kdown/64K up.

Both PC-1 and PC-2 have serial ports and I have
a third (PC-3) which is likely to be connected
next week - this is all on the same 'T' piece
coax line...

What I am considering doing is connecting my
neighbour to either PC-1 or PC-2 through a
56K or 115K Rs232 link across the back fence
because this would limit the speed as he wouldnt
be paying for the full ADSL speed access...
To avoid ground loop issues I was considering
also going to opto-couplers as grounds can
sometimes be a pain,

I'm not concerned with ppp authentication as I
just want my friend to have online internet
all the time and I would do authentication
at the ADSL end for my account. So my friend would
only access Web based email services but it would
be good to have a proxy of sorts so I could reduce
chance of a download shaping cap.

My question is has anyone done this sort of thing
before and is the software for this setup generally
available and what is it called ?

The second reason I'd like to do this is provide
access via a laptop which is an older type with
only 16bit pcmcia, so I cant use USB and I dont
have a LAN card for it that works.

So potentially I might have my friend on his
PC with RS232 net access and my laptop concurrently
accessing through either PC-1 or PC-2 or should I set up
a third PC to handle this exclusively ?

Tah, but if I did that then the neighbour and their kids and friends
have acess to my machine through file sharing and the like at
full speed. So if they are doing downloard etc I get robbed
of bandwidth if I am also wanting to browse...

Isnt there some program on win98se from a 3rd party supplier that
can share an internet connection via some dialup on a port, sure it
needs an assignment and the like for a ppp session but this sort of thing
has been around for years with linux - hasnt anyone written some
windows or even DOS software to do this ?

What about Direct Cable Connection using a serial link?

Yeah thought about that but there is only one internet connection sharing manager
that can be resident at a time and direct cable connection is more for file
sharing and the like, I think I need a ppp connection <sigh>

I've found TCP.COM wich says it does rs232 to tcp/ip and works as client
and server and about to try that out...

Make sure you use a null modem cable, pins are swapped, regular serial cable
won't work.--

I had two computers connected by a proper network and another connected to one
via DCC. By telling the DCC connected computer to look for the one it was not
connected to, the networked one, I could see files on both.
I don't know if that means anything.

mmmm, interesting, could be something lurking from Win98se 'Dialup Networking"
application that could work there as well... I'll try this out on my second
machine as internet connection sharing only seems to allow one 'outlet',
so I suppose I coul try two machines each running an internet conection
sharing manager but with different 'outlets' <sigh> Wish it were simpler,
