We use Windows Messenger 4.7 as an Exchange IM client. One of our users has
a problem where he can send IM just fine, but cannot receive IM from anyone.
He does NOT have anyone blocked in his BLOCKED USERs list.

Also, this happens whether he is signed on to IM on his PC or any other PC.

I tried deleting his IM userid from Active Directory and created his entry
again and IM enabled it and everything, but nothing has worked so far.

Will appreciate anyone who can shed some light on this.

Greetings Mona,

This can occur if the user has the Internet Connection Firewall engaged in Windows XP. To
check, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network
and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet
connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet
Connection Firewall is unchecked.

I've got just the same happening to me. I've tried
everything here including the firewall thing. Haven't
tried on another computer though.

I'm disabled so cannot get out to try to recieve on
another machine.

Are there any other settings I may be overlooking? Like:
START/ RUN/ services.msc or msconfig?

I've had a bit of a fiddle so is there anything that
could be related to recieving messages?

Gratefull of any help

Hi Geno,

I'm not 100% sure we're on the same page (sorry about the confusion) -- are you referring to
e-mail or both mail and Messenger? Or do you mean that you were sending e-mails to your
Hotmail account and waiting for Messenger to show the alert that you got the message?

Assuming the later, which version of Messenger are you using? If you're using Windows
Messenger 5, there is no built-in Hotmail support, and this feature doesn't exist. If you're
using Windows Messenger 4.7, you'll need the MSN Add-in for this feature to work:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/mes...indownload.asp

If you're using MSN Messenger 5 or MSN Messenger 6, open up the main Messenger window, click
the Tools menu, then Options, then General tab, verify that 'Display alerts when e-mail is
received' is checked and click OK.

If this doesn't explain the problem, can you be more specific, for example, is it just the
e-mail alerts that aren't coming in, or is it instant messaging (from other contacts) too?
If you're seeing any error messages, also include those.

Hi Jonathan,

Many thanks from myself and the user who I was helping. He did have the
option checked. Once he un-checked it and re-started IM, he is able to send
and RECEIVE messages.
