Hi! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I am using Outlook 2003 and my computer is running Vista.

I am having problems receiving mail via Outlook. It is connected to a pop
account and it worked fine then last night it stopped receiving mail. I
can still send email.
And my email is still going to the server, because I can read it if I connect
to webmail - as well as on my iphone- it just doesn't download to my
Outlook. Other weird things:

1) Now when I press send/receive the button flashes
orange (it is activated), but then nothing pops up, although mail in the
outbox will go.

2) I tested the Outlook settings again, and the test worked fine, including
connecting to the incoming mail server. However, I never receive the test
messages in my Outlook inbox, although they are visible in my webmail inbox.

3) I wanted to make sure that the send/receive groups settings were set to
check often for mail, but if I go into send/receive options and try to click
on "define send/receive groups", it highlights orange (ie it is activated),
but nothing will pop up - I can't get into those settings.

I've read through all the other posts I can find, and tried various things,
such as:
-checking all of the incoming/outgoing settings
-creating a new profile
-turning off the virus checker for email
I have AVG Free virus scanner software on my computer, and I
turned the email scanner part off. No luck.

No luck! any suggestions????

Thanks for you reply- when I try to open Outlook Safe Mode an error message
pops up:
" An extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: extend.dat. The file
may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, or it may open in
another program. Right-click the folder that contains the file, and then
click on Properties to check your permission for the folder."

When I click the proerties folder of outlook safe mode I am not sure what I
am looking for?

That's good, we're getting somewhere here :-)
Close Outlook and locate extend.dat and rename it to .old. After that, start
Outlook in normal mode and see if it work now.

I went to the site you listed below and cut/pasted the extend.dat
(C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\)
in search to find the location of file. I hope I didn't mess anything up
b/c there were three different extend.dat files that I switched to .old -In
between opening each one I would open Outlook and then forget it was open
when I would try the next- So I don't know if that was why there was no
change in Outlook... I still cannot receive emails!

Sorry for the long wait time- thank you for being patient I have two
little guys with a lot of school activities so I am trying to figure this out
on the side. I'm happy I am atleast getting emails on my iphone but this is
getting to be a pain!

I have the exact same problem as described by ruch33.

I use Windows XP professional SP3 and Office 2003 SP3.

I have gone as far as reinstalling Windows and Office. I have tried on
somebody else’s computer. I have spent long hours on the phone with the ISP
help desk.

I can send mails, I can see my incoming mail at the ISP site, but Outlook
continues to go through all the motions when I press the Send/Receive button
but no mail is downloaded.

This is most frustrating. I have spent the best part of last week
troubleshooting this problem.

I need all the help I can get and will be very, very thankful for any useful
suggestions.

I feel very bad. I followed these instructions and Outlok receive did exactly
the same as before. No mail downloaded. After the try, I found files
"extend.dat.old" and "extend.dat". Any other suggestions?

I had exactly same symptoms as explained in this thread.
I ALSO received the annoying error from NERO "This program requires
the file advrcntr2.dll, which was not found on your system."
Having noticed that extend.dat had an association with Nero (and
other .dat files), so I followed the steps to Clean Nero and totally
uninstall Nero , as shown at http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/468065

After the reboot my Outlook problem was fixed!!

Just curious...when you said you spent hours on the phone with your
ISP did they look at the:
"Incoming server (POP3)" setting?

I would think they did ... but just in case...look to see what the
number is set on?

I had a similar problem when I was traveling and connecting from a
place other than home. I had to change the Incoming server (POP3)
setting and the "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)"
check box.

At home my incoming mail worked fine with a number of "110" and the
SSL box "unchecked".

When traveling I have to set the number to "995" and "check" the SSL
box.

My ISP is Mediacom so that is their two different setting numbers.
Your ISP might have a different set of numbers to work with. If
trying my numbers don't work, I would call the ISP once again and ask
them for their settings in the "Incoming Server (POP3) for both when
you are connecting directly through them from home and when you
travel.

FYI: I can leave the setting for the travel mode (995 and SSL checked)
and that will also work from home. I just can't use the home setting
when connecting from someone else.
