My version of Outlook 2003 is set up so that it does not download pictures
from the internet when they are sent in the text of a message. I think that
is a good feature, but to be useful, I need to know where the pictures are
coming from.

On webpages, when you right-click on an image, you can look at Properties,
and see the URL of the image, but not on email messages. I know these
blocked images have URLs. Is there a way I can see what the URL is before I
have to decide whether to download them, or not?

you should be able to hover over the image placement and it pops up. if
not, right click and view source.

When I hover over the image placement, the yellow popup text box just repeats
what is in the empty box, "Right-click here to download pictures. To help
protect your privacy, Outlook prevented automatic download of this picture
from the internet."

When I right-click on the image placement, the menu options I see are,
"Download Pictures", "Change automatic download settings","Add sender to safe
senders list", and "Add the domain to safe senders list".

It doesn't matter whether I am viewing the message in the preview pane, or
have opened the message, and am viewing it in it's own window.

What version of Outlook, or what configuration of Outlook 2003 are you using
that has "View Source" as an option on the right-click short-cut menu in an
image placement box?

click on any area of the message, not the image - then you will see view
source.
