I need to know if I can have the music playing and save it and then burn it
to a DVD for a slideshow. I tried but when I take out the CD and go to play
the slideshow the CD has to be present..what am I doing wrong?

If you want to embed the sound in powerpoint you will have to rip the music
from the CD and either convert to a wav or add a RIFF header. There are
tutorials for both of these in the sounds section here:

I'm presuming that the CD is not copyright

You need to RIP the CD to create a mp3/wma/wav file (your choice) insert that into your presentation and then burn your DVD

Yes, you can save the slideshow with the music.
Make sure the music file is in the same folder with your powerpoint
file.
Then burn it with a PowerPoint to DVD tool such Wondershare PPT2DVD
