I bring my system down and turn the power off every day. Today, I noticed it
showed a full system scan at 12:18 AM on 2/27/06. How can it show a scan has
been run when my system isn't even on???

Barbara,

Ahhh, the Ghost in the Machine.

The "clocking" of a machine is many times independent of individual
programs. Think of it this way - there is a little man in the box that is
handing out task times for different folks, be they your Symantic or
whomever. The little man's task is now done. If your program (whatever it
is) does not engage or fire, it's not the little guy's problem. He just
notes when it was SUPPOSED to have occurred, not if it HAS occurred.

This is why I never auto-run a "scheduled" program. I always perform it
manually, and if it is something time consuming (such as a NIS complete, four
hour system scan) then I trigger it myself before I go to bed at night and
let it run.

Hope this helps!

Obviously, the power is/was not off. You are probably shutting down to Stand By or Hibernate.

I haven't had any other program reflect that it has run when it hasn't. Why
should this one. It doesn't matter whether it set for automatic or not, it
should reflect what has happened. I look to that to see when I last did one.
And, yes, I know when the power is on or off. I DO NOT put my system on
standby. I not only turn off my machine, I also turn off the power strip to
my machine. I am in Florida and we have lightning storms frequently. I got
used to doing that a long time ago.

The power strip is what convinces me that this may well be a bug of some
sort. Are you sure the machine could not have been on at that time? Is
time set correctly on the machine?

The scheduled task can wake a machine in a sleep state--is this machine a
laptop with a battery, or a desktop?

stand by would make sense--but the power strip is something of an obstacle
to get by. Hibernate is powered off.

I regularly wake powered off machines remotely and work with them--on an ATX
system plugged into a wired LAN, this is pretty easy to arrange in many
cases. However--a network, and actual power to the machine--is needed to do
this--if that power strip had really been off--I wouldn't be able to wake
it. An onboard event can't do this waking, either--the OS is not running.

I don't understand what part of "my system was OFF" that is being
misunderstood. Here are my steps: I go to Start, click on "turn off
computer", hit the "turn off" button, wait until the screen goes black and I
get the blinking green light, then, I turn off the POWER STRIP. THE ENTIRE
SYSTEM IS TOTALLY SHUT DOWN. There is absolutely no power to my system at
that point. I have a desktop, not a laptop. I NEVER have put my system on
standby. When I am through with it, I ALWAYS turn it completely OFF. I would
not have bothered you if it was on standby because I would understand that
certain programs would automatically run. Now, can anyone tell my how my
system can say it did a scan when it was off? How am I supposed to know when
I last did a scan when it gives erroneous information? Before I upgraded to
the Defender, I had the Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta and it never said a scan
had been done when none had. Yes, my system time is correct. It is now 9:41
AM and that is also what my system says, with a date of 3/1/06. I really
would appreciate some help here instead of everyone thinkiing I don't know if
my system power is really off or not. I had already answered this question
twice.

You've satisfied me--the machine was off. What's difficult for me to
imagine is what sort of a bug would have this result--but I'll leave that up
to the Microsoft folks reading these messages. Sorry for the rather
pedantic discussion--there are some complexities that seemed worth checking
on.

Have you considered the possibility someone in the family is using you com
while you peacefully sleep?

There is only me and my 73 year old husband in this house. The PC is in the
bedroom. My husband DOES NOT KNOW how to even turn the system on and doesn't
want to. NO ONE HAS USED THIS MACHINE BUT ME-AT ANY TIME in the several years
I have had a computer.
