I came home to 25000 messages, obviously mostly in error(!). When these tried
to download into Outlook I set it to delete returned items and eventually
this caused it to crash.
1) is there any way of retrieving the messages I did want?
2) I now keep getting 'operation failed' on that profile. i have set up a
new profile that does work, but I do not know how to transport emails on the
original profile to the new profile.
Any ideas on either question?

Does your mail provider give you web based access to your email? If it
does, go there and delete them. Otherwise, not really, Outlook tries to
download what is there.

As for the emails, just make sure both are using the same PST file, or just
open up the other PST file in the new profile and move whatever emails you
want. Don't use File - Import to pull them in.

Thank you for your quick reply and useful comments. I'll apply your
suggestions to the new profile.
On the original outlook profile is there any way I can 'lose' the operation
failed error message (it doesn't say any more than that) when trying to
access mail - it allows me to send but not receive on the one account that
had the 25000 emails, and the other accounts I have it continues to behave
normally.
The 25000 autoresponder messages must be still clogging up that part of the
system somewhere in the original outlook profile as i have it set to delete
them from the web based server once downloaded and they are no longer on the
web server.
I would really prefer to have just the one profile as I keep a lot of
business folders on the original. many thanks again for your help.

I'm not sure there's a way to fix the profile, but, what do you mean 'I keep
a lot of business folders on the original'? I can't think of anything that
you couldn't simply (and I do mean simply) redo in a new profile. What are
you missing in the new profile?

This is basically a business account so i keep all my emails in separate
folders for different parts of the business, and there are a lot of emails in
each folder, whcih I don't really want to have to sort through. I know you
mentioned pst files, but I don't know about these either and when i have
tried in the past I have never been able to open them. Incidentally, could
the lost files be there?

However, this problem (although the lost emails are quite serious) may be a
blessing in disguise and perhaps I can create a better profile which is
better organised now. I can always keep the other one if I need to refer back
to other emails.

All mail is kept in a PST file.

If you go to Control Panel - Mail - Show Profiles, pick the old profile,
Properties - Data Files, you can figure out what PST file the old profile
used.

Then, in your new profile, just go to File - Open - Outlook Data file and
select the old PST. You can't open a PST file by double clicking it.
