How can I restore my Deleted Items folder?

I have my email setup with IMAP, and while managing my folders I accidentally
deleted my "Deleted Items" folder (the default folder created by Outlook). I
cannot find any way to restore that folder, or recreate it and direct my
deleted items to the new folder.

Now when I delete emails they are just gone and I cannot recover them or
"undo" a delete. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am now hesitant to
delete anything as it will be gone for good if I do.

IMAP doesn't have a Deleted Items folder and even if you saw one, Outlook
didn't use it. Messages marked for deletion remain in in their original
folders and will identified by an overstrike through their header lines in the
"IMAP Messages" view. They'll remain that way until you purge them with
Edit>Purge or until you exit Outlook if you're using Outlook 2007 and have
selected that option.

Outlook 2010 will use IMAP protocols to employ the Deleted Items folder by
moving the "deleted" message to that folder, then purging the original folder,
so IMAP in Outlook 2010 will appear work more like POP accounts in this
regard.

Thanks for the link, Oliver. However, that thread thoroughly explains the
IMAP setup and what it does/doesn't do, but it doesn't actually help to
resolve the issue. I had a "deleted items" folder where my emails were being
sent when I deleted them from the inbox, but I accidentally deleted that
"deleted items" folder and now I cannot get it back.

When I delete mail now, it is removed from my inbox (not just a strikethough
with purge later) and it is gone (auto-purge is off and it's not hiding
deleted items in the inbox). I don't want to just see the deleted items in my
inbox until they purge, I want them to be sent back to a "deleted items"
folder until I manually purge them like before.

Thanks, Brian.

All I know is that my email setup was changed to IMAP for my iPhone, but I
did actually have a deleted items folder and Outlook was actually using it.
Messages remained in the inbox as well with a strikethrough when I didn't
have them hidden, but they also were copied to the deleted items folder.

I don't know how or why it was like this, but that is what I am trying to
get back.

Outlook simply cannot and does not behave that way with an IMAP account for
any currently released version.

Outlook cannot make use of the Deleted Items folder in an IMAP account. This
may be what you think you saw and clearly there is an explanation, but it was
not Outlook using it.

As IMAP doesn't HAVE a "deleted Items" folder, as I'm sure Brian told you, I
don't know why or where you expect this "deleted items" folder to be. IMAP
just doesn't work that way prior to Outlook 2010. If you REALLY want one,
then just create one in your IMAP folders.
Right-click on the IMAP account in the folder pane and choose "New
Folder"...

Hello Brian and Seth,

I have experienced the same as Seth. Despite the fact that according the specs it could be possible to have purged emails from an IMAP account are being moved into the regular delete folder from Outlook, it worked for me as well.

I had set the IMAP with automaticly purge on switching folders. The deleted messages showed up in my deleted items folder in outlook. It worked also my girlfriends computer.

So let say it can not work, than the questions is could there be a way that depending on how or when you install the IMAP account that outlook somehow connects the inbox to the deleted files?
Could it matter what the settings are when you install the email account like default account.

I have searched forums to find something back on this subject, since I remember I had found an article that related to this matter in the past but cannot find it.

Just for your info when I installed My Imap account I had 2 existing POP3 accounts running. After installing my imap account I deleted the default account since it was useless for me.

I have not deleted any folder but the when I changed some views from the IMAP account the connection to my "deleted folder" was gone and I can not get it back again.

So my conclusion is outlook 2007 has a capability to do it, but it is more a hidden feature than a normal procedure.

Rik
