Can I replace on-board USB 1.1 slots by a separate USB 2.0 -PCI card ?

Unfortunately my motherboard (ECS K7S5A rev5.0 resp. rev1.0) has only USB slots of standard 1.1.

Is it possible to buy an additional PCI card with 2.0 USB slots and use them instead ?

In order not to confuse Win2000/WinXP I assume that I have to disable the old USB 1.1 slots.

How do I do this ? Is there a switch/option for them ?

How do I tell Win200/WinXP to use 2.0 drivers and USB 2.0 slots when new external USB devices
are plugged into the new USB slots ?

Peter

Bummer.

Yes.

No.

In the BIOS and maybe jumpers on the MB.

They'll know. Driver disk should be included but may not be necessary
with XP/2000.

Hi Peter...

Yes - you can get PCI slot USB 2 cards - usually in a bank of four -
sometimes with an internal USB slot, that can be used for items such as
a card reader, that fits in a front panel main slot or above/below the
floppy drive...

Switch off power, remove the metal tab, plug the card into a slot -make
sure it's secure - switch on and boot up... Windows XP should pick up
the added hardware, but in case this doesn't happen, there's usually a
CD of some sort with the card...

Just plug in and use the new slots - that's all there is to it...
There's no need to 'switch off' the USB 1.1 appliances: you can
continue to use them in the normal way... They'll just be slower and
you might get a message pop up to tell you same...

Not sure about WIN 2000, but Win XP should work a treat...

Enjoy...

Peter,

You can add a separate PCI card with USB 2.0. You do not have to disable to
older on-board USB 1.1 ports, if you are not familiar on did this. They can
both coexists.

A PCI USB 2.0 card will work great on that board. You will have extra USB
ports, you do not need to disable the old ports. They will still work as
USB 1.0. The new card is USB 2.0 will have functional USB 2.0 ports. You
need the latest Windows update to get USB 2.0 to work.

Yes

No. You can leave these active and continue to use them if you want
to. Windows will autodetect the USB devices as they are connected
and will access the correct port.

You could go into the BIOS setup and disable the on-board USB ports if
you want to. But there is no need to do so.

The added USB 2.0 ports will have their own separate entries in Device
Manager and these entries will be linked to the correct USB 2.0
drivers. The original USB 1.1 ports have different entries in Device
Manager and these are linked to the appropriate drivers for them.

Good luck

Hello Peter...

I placed a reply on the Google/Microsoft board yesterday, regarding
your USB2 enquiry, but it seems to have disappeared... So I'm trying
again...

Yes - you can get a PCI - USB 2.0 card, normally with four slots...
Some even have an internal slot as well, which is useful for front
mounted card readers and the like... These work well with WIN XP, but
I've no working knowledge of how they react to/with WIN 2000...

XP should pick the card up when you re-boot, although there might well
be a CD (with drivers) in the box, should you need it...

There is no need to switch off the USB 1.1... You can continue to use
those as or if required, although you might get a message pop up to
tell you that your appliance (if USB 2) would work faster in a USB2
slot...

Enjoy your computing...

Yes, you can easily install a PCI card with USB 2.0 ports.

You can use both USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports at the same time.

> How do I do this ? Is there a switch/option for them ?

You should be able to disable the motherboard's USB ports in
the BIOS. Double check the manual first before looking.

Just plug in USB 2.0 capable devices to USB 2.0 ports for them to
be automatically recognized. You will need WinXP SP2 for
the required driver.

There is no problem with the onboard ports. Just put an USB2 card
in and use its port for high speed devices. The onboard ports
will still work. There no conflict, no problem at all.

You can add a USB 2.0 PCI card. You can leave your 1.1 enabled as well
(use for mouse and other slow things).
The board will likely be recognized by XP and driver will be installed
without you having to do much, or it should come with a driver disk and
instructions.
Windows should run devices at the correct speed without you having to
choose. If a device or port is 1.1, it will run at that speed (you will
get a warning from XP if you plug a 2.0 device into a 1.1 port). If both
the device and port are 2.0, it will run at that speed.
