Depends on whether Word was saving it or not. If it was only in memory,
and Word hadn't used the disk, it's gone.

You may find it in one of the TEMP folders, but the name may not be obvious,
so look at the file times.

Go to Start, run, type %temp% and press enter. From there, sort by date.
The files may well *not* be .doc files, but rather temp files, and you may
just be recovering text, having to reformat completely. You may need to
open with Notepad or something similar.

It's a good habit to save compulsively. As soon as you get the document
title, save the document, then whenever you stop to think or breathe, press
control and S to save. This takes a very short time, and will help keep
this from ever happening again.

Jesus and Satan are arguing over who is the best computer programmer. They
decide to have a contest with God as the judge. They set up two computers
with God looking on. Jesus and Satan both begin typing furiously for hours
writing code, etc.

All of a sudden, lightening strikes both computers and Jesus and Satan lose
all power. Satan stares flabbergasted at his blank computer screen while
Jesus looks calmly around. Finally, the two of them power back up their
computers and Satan cries out in anguish when he realizes he has lost all his
work. He turns to look at Jesus' computer screen and sees that his work has
popped right back up on the screen, right where he left off. Satan turns to
God and demands to know how it was that Jesus recovered everything, while all
his work was lost. God regards Satan with a wry smile and simply says:

"Jesus Saves"

You should too.

You don't mention which type of application you were using to produce your
document. If it was with MS Word, then it will have performed a backup file
in the background. I think the default is every 10 minutes, but not sure
about that.

If you have been using Word, then try opening up Word again and see if it
gives you the option to recover the backed up document. I am using Office
2003 at work and this has saved me in the past.

As another poster has already commented, it is definitely worth saving the
file every so often - usually at a logical thought process point so that if
you recover it, you have some idea when the last save occured.

I cannot remember if the save a backup option is a default in Word or not.
Check in Tools/Options/Save tab for if the 'Save autorecover info every' is
ticked. You can obviously change the time if you want.

Good luck

Martin
