I see there is a fix for non-OEM versions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
(Article ID#307545) for corrupted registries that prevents XP from starting,
but I cant find one for the OEM version. I already understand how to use the
recovery console and the recovery process, but am baffled there isnt a sim.
fix for the many OEM users??

One option is to do a repair install.

Another way, but you have to plan ahead for this, is to backup the registry
regularly using a program such as ERUNT. If the backups are stored in a sub
folder inside the Windows folder then the registry can be restored from a
backup by booting the installation CD and entering the the recovery console,
then running a program in one of the ERUNT backup folders.

If you are knowledgeable about registry editing, and you think you
could hunt down the problem, you could slave the drive in another
computer, and load the bad registry by loading the pieces as hives on
the good machine using regedit. (Click on HKLM (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE).
On the menu, select File, Load Hive, and choose your old registry
hives (software\sam\security...) ).

A clarification here: the issue is *not* with OEM copies of WIndows vs,
Retail copies. It's with OEM computers that don't come with OEM installation
CDs vs. Retail and OEM copies with installation CDs.

Yes, you need an installation CD to use the Recovery Console, but any
installation CD, even an OEM one, will work.

Personally, for many reasons, not just this one, I would never choose to buy
a computer that came with an operating system unless I got a complete
generic installation CD for that operating system. That's one of the reasons
I like Dell better than most of the other big national OEMs--they provide an
installation CD for the slight additional price of $10, and it's well worth
it.
