Can receive but not send in XP

I looked over the forum and could not find a discussion on this problem.

This AM, Outlook quit sending emails in XP Pro on my computer and Vista premium on my wife's computer,

We have both been on the same wireless router for several months, but we do not have anything setup as a sharing network.

We have not changed any setting for at least 4 months.

Test account settings says verify port and SSL information. we have not changed anything, so what the heck can we chack.

Can anyone help?

Only if you post the exact error messages, what account type you are using,
and your Outlook version.

Thanks for the reply. I will try to give more info.

I have 5 email accounts, using three different SMTP addresses. Two SMTP addresses are through a local ISP which hosts a few websites and the third is Comcast. All have worked without a problem for several months.

I am not sure what account type means, but I am using Outlook 2003 (11.8206.8202) SP3.

My computer is XP Pro. My wife’s computer is Vista Premium. She is having the exact same problem with two SMTP addresses.

I have deleted the last Outlook update of June 11.

I have unplugged the Linksys N Router and gone through the restarting session. We both use the router but are not set up as a sharing network.

I do not have SSL checked in Outlook.

I do not log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA).

My outgoing server (SMTP) does not require authentication.

Incoming server (POP3) uses 110 Server Port
Outgoing Server (SMTP) uses 25 Server Port.

Test Account Settings error messages:

 Send test e-mail message: The specified server was found; but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct. To access these settings, close this dialog, then click More Setting and click on the Advanced tab.

 Find outgoing mail server (SMTP): Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP). The problem could be the server name or port, or your server may not support SSL. Verify your port and SSL settings in More Settings under the Advanced tabs.

Is this enough for you to help figure out what the heck is going wrong?

Any help will be appreciated.

Unusual. Are you positive?

These indicate fairly stringly that despite what you think, in fact you are
using the wrong port(s) or the wrong security settings.

"Stringly"? I meant "strongly".

Thanks for your comments. It turns out that you are correct but not why.

It seems that somehow, I acquired a virus that ended up going out in an email.

As a result, Comcast shut down my sending ability through their box. I found this out after a few phone calls and finally finding someone who was willing to listen.

I changed the SMTP port and everything seems to be cleared.

Thanks to all who read this and wondered, "How did that happen?"

Well, now you know.

Perhaps you should change the antivirus program you use. There are any
number of them available, some free, that are very good. Each AV program
has a different performance footprint and some detect threats others do not
at various times. Each AV vendor attempts to make the offered AV program as
comprehensive as possible, but nothing's perfect.

Many AV vendors offer on-line scans and it doesn't hurt to try a selection
of those scans from time to time.
