Hello everyone

How can I prevent windows updates from using a specific network connection?

in depth:
My user now has a 3G WWAN card and wants to use it to connect to the
corporate VPN when out of range of conventional WiFi hotspots. She has a
monthly contract that allows roaming europe wide for a reasonable fee but
data is limited to 50MB/day. I want to ensure that windows update will not
use the WWAN connection. To do this I will need to prevent windows update
using the VPN as well. The VPN is presented as a NIC, so I'll be preventing
windows updates on both connections (WWAN & VPN)

PC:
Windows XP Pro SP2 + updates to date
member of domain
openvpn
vodafone 3G data card, pretty good bandwidth -

Any ideas how I can do this or info on how you have managed WWAN &
background traffic like Windows updates?

Thanks

A.

Probably the best idea is to set the Automatic Updates service to Manual,
and start it manually when on an unrestricted network.

net start wuauserv

from a command prompt or shortcut will start it.

Best workaround would be to configure Automatic Updates to the "Notify Only"
setting (user will have to approve the downloads and installs, in which case
she should not download anything unless she's not connected via the WWAN
card).

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

PS: It is not necessary or desirable to disable the AU Service as Antaeus
suggested, IMHO.
