How can I prevent unwanted dialups?

There was a website I logged on to that caused a dialout of my modem. It wasn't an annomaly because I went back to the same website to see if it would happen again, and it did. Even though I could hear the dialout, I did not know how to stop it, other than shutting down my computer. I have heard that sometimes websites will force dialouts to 900 numbers, etc., and that the call can connect and go on for hours running up some horrible bills.

I also think I may have been lucky in that I heard the dialout. It seems to me that if these vandals can force a dialout, they may be smart enough to make the dialout silent.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this?

Hi

Try these programs to check for any spyware that may be on your system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Also see the following link:

In IE's Tools, Options, I think the Advanced tab, there is a
setting to warn you before switching internet calls or
something like that. While you do the other things I'd
check that out - but also do the adware etc. suggestions.
Spybot can look for a lot of dialer robots too, in case it
got into your hd.

I couldn't find the setting you are talking about. Do you have any more
information?

I have Spybot, and it says I'm clean. I don't think it's spyware. I
think it's a script that executes when you call up it's resident web page.

Look in Internet Explorer, in the tools menu, internet options the
connections tab, and be sure it says NEVER dial a connection.

Thanks for your feedback.

I had already thought of that, and MSIE was set that way when I got the
dialups. I should have mentioned that in my original message.

I don't think MSIE is doing the dialing. I think some malicious
webmasters program scripts that do it. I could easily be wrong, but it is
the only theory that seems to fit.

Hi Gary,

Haven't followed this post but.....

Right click My Network Places/Properties/Advanced (top toolbar)/Dial-Up
Preferences/Enable Auto-Dial by Location/Uncheck all locations and check off
always ask me before auto dialing. Also, Disable autodial while I am logged
on.

In the Enable Auto-Dial By Location dialog box, select each location for
which you want the automatic dialing feature to operate. Reboot.

Disable or Enable AutoDial (Line 91)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To view the list of names and addresses recorded by AutoDial, type the
following command at a command prompt: rasautou -s

To delete a name or address entry from the list: Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\RAS Autodial\Addresses

Disable "Log on using dial-up connection" (Line 77)

That will probably fix it. I had one location checked "New location
(the current location)". I don't know what that means, but I unchecked it
and it looks good to me for solving the problem.

Thanks!
