I have a strange situation where I can ping web sites using domain names like www.yahoo.com, but I cannot access any websites using either IE or Netscape. To try to remedy this, I have recently installed SP4 for W2K. THis did not help. Then I installed AOL 9.0 (ugh) just to get a new version of IE (6) installed as a side effect to see if that would help (probably not a good idea). I have since uninstalled AOL. (This is an older laptop for family use and I probably installed one or two other older versions of AOL a year or two ago.) I have a cable modem that works great with another newer laptop running xp, but this older laptop running W2K will not connect with either browser.

Thanks in advance for any insight on this...

First things to check, in this order, are

1. Spyware/Malwar
2. Viruse

We have seen many instances where a piece of Malware (or indeed many pieces) have prevented web searching, but the Internet connection is live and DNS is working

Download Spybot and/or Adaware, use the latest definition files, and remove all that gunk
Then update your AV software and scan too.

Problem solved. I called Microsoft support and they had me delete and re-install my TCP/IP protocol for my LAN connection. It involved mucking a little with the registry first (had to delete winsock and winsock2 services). Here is summary of case from Microsoft

Result > Page cannot be displayed

Cause > Corrupted TCP/IP stack

Resolution > Manually removed and reinstalled the Internet Protocol. This successfully resolved the issu
