can ping but IE cannot access

I just reinstalled the OS and chipset drivers. Now, I can ping
yahoo.com but IE says server not found. What could be the
problem? The NIC seems to work fine. I can see other computers
on the LAN.

Another problem: when I right-click on network neighborhood and
select property, I do not see local area network nor 1394 network.

Are these two problems related?
