Seems like this might be an easy one for more experienced users.
Opening IE 6.0 used to start AOL 9.0 and connect to the internet when I
used dial-up. Now that I've switch to AOL cable broadband via my LAN,
Opening IE will no longer start AOL. It's only a minor inconvenience
that I must now start AOL and minimize it to use IE, but it seems like
there should be a simple solution which I have yet to discover. Any
suggestions?

I am not sure if you want to start the AOL browser or IE with AOL as your
home page?

To start IE with AOL as your home page -

1. Start IE and select the Tools>Internet Options menu. On the General tab
you will find the settings for your Home Page (this is the first page that
IE opens when it is started). Enter the address of your AOL home page
(http://www.aol.com )

2. You can also create a shortcut on your desktop that will start IE and
navigate to your AOL homepage.
Right click on your desktop and select New>Shortcut from the drop-down menu.
In the field 'Location for the new item' enter http://www.aol.com.
Enter the name for your shortcut on the next page of the dialog and save
your shortcut.

To set the AOL browser as your default internet browser select the Start>Set
Program Access and Defaults. You should find an option there to set the AOL
browser as your default (I don't have it so I am not sure if this will work
and I suspect that if you do this then the AOL browser will use the
pre-existing dial-up connection rather than the new broadband connection)

The purpose of having IE start AOL was to connect to the internet,
since AOL is my ISP. Setting AOL as my home page will not work because
when I open IE I am not yet on the internet.

Also tried setting AOL as my default browser. Not only did IE not
start AOL, but when I went back to Set Program Access and Defaults, AOL
was no longer selected. Instead "Use my current Web browser" was
selected. I tried it twice and the same thing happened.

It seems as though the problem might have something to do with the
difference between connecting to the internet via dailing versus via
the LAN, but I'm not sure.
