The pictures are from an e-mail that is a know virus-free source. I just
can't find any program that will open them.
What kind of software uses this extension? And where can I find it?

In addition to TAJ's suggestion, or to tag along on it ...

Whoever sent you the photos in this format surely has the software to open the
files. Explain to them that you don't and ask them to save the photos in a
common format like JPG or PNG so that you can view them.
