How can I open old DBX files (from Ouloook Express), containing my old
message folders (e.g. inbox, outbox etc.), in the new Windows Vista Mail? I
tried to import them, by it did not work...
Could anybody help me?

Thanks in advance

you don't open them, if you did, you stand a good chance of screwing them up
if you save it.

File | Import
make sure you have ALL the dbx files (folders.dbx is required)

When you tried to import them did you point to the dbx files or the folder
that holds them? You need to point to the folder, and the folder must also
contain the proper Folders.dbx.

If that doesn't work try DBXtract or DBXpress (www.oehelp.com)

Thanks.
When I tried to import them, I pointed to a folder containing it. But in the
folder containing it there was no folder FOLDERS.DBX. How can I create such
a proper folder by using Windows Mail?

By the way - although the folder I pointed to was E:/Outlookfiles, the
Windows Mail importing software understood it as
E:/Outlookfiles/Outlookfiles. A little bit strange...

I am using the Polish version of Windows Vista.
My dbx files come from the Polish version of Outlook Express 6.0.

Thanks a lot!

Still one question to the following fragment from the page
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#oe2wm:

"5. Then use the Browse button to browse to the directory of dbx files. Make
sure that when you set the directory that what is listed in the path is
correct (NOTE: Vista can put the wrong path in here sometimes, so instead of
c:\mypath it puts c:\mypath\mypath, so check the path to verify that it is
correct, and if it is not correct then fix it)."

How can I put the correct path, if the field where the path is to be put in
cannot be changed and Vista does each time put a wrong doubled path (exactly
in the same way as in this example above, i.e. "c:\mypath\mypath" instead of
"c:\mypath")?

The problem is solved!!! The reason was the doubling of the folder name in
the path listed in the Windows Mail import Window! iThe correct solution is
described in the first comment to the message "Copying e-mails from Outlook
Express to Windows Mail":

Create a folder on Vista machine.
Copy ALL the dbx files from the machine with OE6 on it to the folder you
created on the Vista machine.
File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6
press Next
press Browse
navigate to the folder you copied the dbx files to.
Select it.
in the Filename line, remove it (yes I said rmove it it's another in the
long line of bugs not fixed)
press Open button
finish up the import.

My comments:
1) I had just all the data files from my old Win98 machine onto my new Vista
machine copied. In this way the folder containing all the dbx files,
including the Folders.dbx file, was transferred onto the new Vista PC, as
well.
2) The File name line specified above is the file name line in Windows
Exploer, not in the Windows Mail import window!!!

Importing from OE to WM works perfectly for me, and I've done it several
times repeatedly..

If you're having problems, perhaps you're not bringing over *all* the files,
in particular folders.dbx. They will not import from read-only media such
as CD.

Similarly, bringing over the WAB file can imports perfectly.

Past that "doesnt' work" isn't a helpful description for determining what is
happening or why. A description of the method and results is needed.
