What type of attachments are they?

What happens if you save them to your desktop and double click on them?

It sounds like you don't have the application required to open whatever you
are being sent, so, the first step is to look at what you're being sent and
figure out what should be opening it.

Also, what version of Outlook?

Thank you F H

I think i`m using outlook 6.
I`ve one attachment in the inbox and it says "DOC FILE" with a choce of
opening it or cancelling it. If i open it, it says "This file does not have
a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an
association in the set associations control panel. I have looked but i can`t
find anything so i`m obviously looking in the wrong place.

Other attachments say FIND OPEN OR CANCEL, if i press find it takes me to
microsoft This is how i found these discussions)
thanks

Ok, a few things.

First, could you go to Help - About and tell us what it says there? Outlook
6 isn't really something that exists. And Outlook Express was renamed on
Vista to be Windows Mail, so I'm curious what it is that you're usingl.

Second, *should* you be able to open a doc file? I hate to sound esoteric,
but, why do you think you should be able to open the file? Have you been
able to on this machine before? Do you have word installed on this machine?

Hi
Thanks for the info. I will go to the help section and see what it says. Yes
on my windows vista it is called windows mail, on my daughters computer which
is windowas xp that is still outlook express 6. And on that one i could open
any attachment plus i never "set anything up" i just used to click and it
opened!!!

So do you know what the set associations control panel is??

I`d be grateful for any advice you can give me as i`m self teaching myself
on the computer and it`s these little things that are frustrating.

Thank you for your time

Which is a completely different program. Windows Mail/Outlook Express are
generally handled in a different newsgroup.
microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general for future reference. That said, I
think I can give you an answer right now, tho I really don't have enough
information.

> And on that one i could open

Ok. Lets get basic on this.

A file name may (or may not) have a suffix (known as an extension) on it.

In other words:
resume.doc
spreadsheet.xls
presentation.ppt

The .XXX is the extension.

That extension is what helps Windows understand what application is used to
open the file.

Most applications when you install them set up relationships in Windows that
says 'Files with this extension should be opened by me.'

Windows doesn't automatically know how to open up every file type. There
are some extensions it recognizes on a basic install, but not all.

So, it sounds like previously, on Windows XP, you had an application
installed that said 'Files with the extension .doc should be opened by me'.
More than likely, that program was either Microsoft Word or WordPad.

Is Office installed on the computer? If it is, I would rerun setup and that
should fix the file associations.

If it isn't, then you need to associate the .doc file with WordPad, assuming
it is on the machine..

So, save one of those files to the hard drive out of Windows Mail.

Right click on the file and go to Properties.

Where it says Opens With, click the Change button.

If Microsoft Office Word is listed there, click it.

If it is not, click on the Vista icon in the lower left hand part of your
desktop and in the Start Search box, type 'wordpad'. Wait until it is done
searching. If it finds WordPad, right click on it and select properties.
Copy what it says in Target to the clipboard and go back to the window that
opened up when you hit Change. Click the Browse button and paste the text
in for the file name and click Open.

If WordPad isn't on the machine, then you need to find a piece of software
that will open up word files. You may be best served by asking your
daughter for help as she can guide you through it in person at your own
speed.

Hi
Thank you i can now open doc file although it doesnt come up properly to
print off but at least i can read what the person has sent so thank you very
much.

i`ve just tried to open an xls file.followig the same instuctions you gave
for the doc file, but although notepad opens it`s just a jumble of numbers
and letters. Do i have to do anything different for that file? when you go
into it to change it only says notepad or adobe reader and i`ve tried both of
them with the same results!!

Again thank you for your time, you are a great help to me

That's because notepad doesn't actually understand Word or Excel files.

It never has. It never will.

Go install the Word Viewer here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Go install the Excel Viewer here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Go install the compatibility pack here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If you have any other office document types you need to open, search in the
search box.

Again... Windows does not understand office file types out of the box. If
you were able to open them on a previous machine, it is because some other
piece of software was installed, such as Office.

The viewers above simply let you read the file, you won't be able to edit
the file.
