After trying numerous time I can only start XP in safe mode. I can not start
in "last known good state". This computer has been solid without problems
until yesterday. When I am in safe mode I can get to my programs. Any help
will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Stephenf,

A suggestion would be to
open msconfig and go to
the boot.ini tab

There you will find some
helpful features, one of which
is to search for all boot paths.

In this case you want it to search
for the normal boot path.

This should fix you right up.
But if not there are other options avail
as well.....

From the advanced options menu where it lists safe mode, select the option
to not automatically restart on failure. Hopefully it will now stop at the
Blue screen where you can record the error message verbatim and do some
research on it. Start with this site: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Thanks Rock.

the only advanced option i could find was in the system porperties, advanced
tab, startup and recovery. unfortuantely it will not allow me to disable
auto restart while in safe mode. since i can not start in normal mode is
there a different advanced option that you were referring to?

thanks again to anyone who can help.

There should be choice for this on the same menu that shows safe mode when
you restart the computer. I don't remember the wording exactly. The menu
that lists Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, etc is called the
Advanced Options menu.

If you can't otherwise get things going, then you'll need to try a repair
install:

There are only three safe modes, 1) safe mode, 2) safe mode with networking
and 3) safe mode with command prompt. The other modes are normal and last
known config that worked. i can only get into the safe modes.

you can turn off the
blue screen restart from
inside safemode.

go to control panel,
system, advance and
startup recovery feature.

then you can provide
the error code to rock.

That's strange it's not there, and you can't set it safe mode. Try the
repair install.
