A good starting point would be to tell us what exactly
happens when you attempt to start the machine in normal
mode.

If you know when the problem started then you can use
System Restore to return to a point well before this date.

This is what <Rod g.> shared with us today ...

Does it boot automatically into safe mode or offers you an option to
choose safe-mode at boot time?
When you shut off your computer do you just simply power down? Or do
you use the start menu and choose shut-down?

Respectfully,

I can sometimes shut down with start menu but usually have to power down. I
always have a choice to start in safe mode. The windows xp screen comes up
and the running blue lites keep running rather than moving onto the sign in
screen so then I shut down and open up in safe mode, in the past It will just
start working properly after a few days than last for months before it acts
up again. Thanks for any help that you can give me

Have you tried running CHKDSK? I accidentally unplugged my power strip
while Windows was shutting down from the Start Menu a few days ago, and it
would not start the next time I tried, not even in the safe mode. I tried
to start with the Windows XP installation disk and was able to get to a C:\>
prompt by pressing the "R" for repair. I typed CHKDSK at the C:\> prompt
and after several lines of "checking and repairing" the computer ran through
all the files and told me the hard drive was okay. The computer started up
normally the next time I tried and has worked great since then. Also, I
discovered 37 KB of "Old Chkdsk files" in the Disk Cleanup window-- most
likely the corrupted files causing my startup problem.

Good Luck.
