I replaced a win98 computer which used ICS with a new XP computer. The
other computers on the network are connected via a hub to the new XP
computer. The XP computer has two ethernet cards, one connnected to
the cable modem and one connected to the LAN.

Everything is working except the XP machine I can only map other
computers drives as \\<ip address>\<sharename> I would like to use the
computer's name instead of the IP address. When I do this, the XP
computer says it can't find the other computers. All other computer on
the LAN are Win98 computers and they also cannot connect to the XP
computer by its name.

What do I need to do to map drives by \\<name>\<sharename>?

TIA.

sounds like name resolution issue. I would try to enable netbios over tcp/ip
on xp first.

I have it enabled (on the LAN NIC, not on the ICS NIC). Still doesn't
work.

I can see the target computer in my workgroup but can only connect to
it AFTER I've mapped a drive using the IP address. Once this is
successful, I can use the computer's name to map it's drives. And open
it from the workgroup view.

Any ideas? Thanks.
