Can I set outlook to notify me when I have received an e-mail?

Yes. Go to Tools, Options, Preferences, E-mail options, Advanced E-mail
Options, then change the options under When new items arrive in my Inbox.

This is turned on by default, but you can find the notification settings at
Tools | Options | Preferences tab | Email Options button | Advanced E-mail
Options. Your after the section labeled "When new items arrive in my
Inbox".

If you need additional assistance, you should post what version of Microsoft
Outlook you are using and what type of e-mail account you are working with.
