We have a network of about 20 computers and the other day,
we suddenly were not able to view the workgroup computers
on all of the PCs besides one of them. The workgroup name
is displayed, but when you double click it, there is a
minutes pause, and then an error pops up: The workgroup is
unavailable. It will be greatly apprieciated if any can
help me trouble shoot this problem.

Hi,

I'm having this same problem here at home. I have two computers both are
Windows 2000 Pro., one is in my office and the other in my livingroom. They
are networked together through a broadband router/switch, it's a SMC
Baracade, that is also my DHCP server. Both computers have the same
workgroup name and in the same IP address range.

On the office computer, when I go to My Network Places|Computers Near me I
get an error message that reads:

Workgroup is not accessible.
The network name cannot be found.

From the livingroom computer everything is working well. I have no trouble
accessing Computers Near Me and the shares on the computer in the office.
Must be a problem with the computer in the office.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Linn

Do you have File and Print sharing enabled?

You could try to right click on My Network Places and do a
search for the computers names. Just to see if they are
there.

If they are then try stopping and starting the computer
browser service.

Off topic, but a 20-PC workgroup sounds like a real pain to administer. I
don't recommend workgroup configs for more than a small handful of
computers. I'd put in a server and a domain if it were up to me....

Thanks for the tip Jeff. When I came back today, after shutting the
computers off last night, everything is working fine. I don't know, maybe I
just needed to do as you suggested and restart the browsing service.

Thanks,
Linn
