When I try to turn on Windows defender in the Security Center a small window
opens... Checking for new definitions....There are no new definitions
available to download for Windows defender. Close the window and Defender is
still off.
Any suggestions?

If you think that the Security Center is possibly not reporting to you
accurately, and you're on Vista then...

Run a cmd prompt as administrator.
Enter the following command: winmgmt /verifyrepository
which checks the integrity of the WMI database and let us know the results.

If your on XP the above command won't work though, so we'd need to know
what OS you're running.

Too, besides running Dave's command if it's appropriate for your OS, are you
running Windows Live OneCare?

And yet another possibility, is your system date set correctly? Check it
by clicking the time clock on the taskbar notification area.

Error code: 0x80041003
Facility: WMI

Did you run Command Prompt, by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing "Run
as Administrator"? Again, did you install Windows Live OneCare?

Hi Matt;

Good news, you just have to rebuild your WMI database.
Run this command again as an administrator: winmgmt /salvagerepository
The first time you run this it will fail. It will issue stop commands to
the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for the
services to shut down. Run the command again. Sometimes it takes up to 5
times
before it finally completes on its own.
Reboot your system, and you should be OK.
Let us know how you make out.

Regards, Dave
