Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000, with a DVD/CD rom abd a Sony CD R/RW.
The computer will boot from both CDs and will play audio CDs. However it
will not read data CDs.

I get the following message "G:\ (or H:\) is not available Incorrect
Function" when I try to see a data CD. They show up in the Setup and in My
Computer.

The drives seem to be OK from a boot om when playing audio. It seem to be a
problem in the setting someplace or a missing file.

Any help will be appricated.

Thanks, Dick Jones

You have a bad drive. Replace it.

If it is a SM-308B, these have *very* high failure rates with the EXACT problem you
mentioned.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response.

I hope you are wrong about needing to replace the drives.

M drives are: LG DVD-ROM DRN8080B and SONY CD-RW CRX700E

I have Win 2000 SP4. Have 128 Memory and 20GB HD

I had just reciently loaded SystemWorks 2005. I had run the Anti-virus and
the Norton Utilities to check for any problems. Shortly after that I could
not use the CDs. I ran the troubleshooter in windows and it suggested
checking an audio cd. The audio CD worked fine. I also checked that it
would boot from the CD.

I am surprised that both drives would fail at the same time.

Can thoes drives for a DELL LapTop be found any place other than DELL??

With 2 new DVD/CD drives , a little more memory and a larger HD, a new
laptop seems an option.

Is it normal fo LapTop CDs to fail in a few years??

Thanks again, Dick Jones

Hi Geoff,

I Have bsudf.sys in system32\drivers, udfs.sys in system32\drivers,
udfs.sys in $NtServicePackUninstall$, and Genudf.dll in Ahead\Nero.

Reinstalling the software is difficult with out one of the CDs. Unless I
can copy the CD to the HD on the net from another computer with a working CD
which is the next thing I am going to try.

Thanks for the help, Dick Jones

Fret not - it has nowt to do with your hardware - it's Norton being unhelpful
yet again. A simple uninstall of the systemworks software and hey presto the
CD drives will reappear as if they haven't been away.....and that's the
problem they haven't gone anywhere but you just can't do anything with them
while Norton faff around trying to support you through a very traumatic
install. Sorry but I don't have the solution and am considering returning
the software and finding an alternative - only one problem - what's the
alternative for a Windows 2000 PC that doesn't have all the bells and
whistles of XP?

I just spent an entire day dealing with this exact problem. After removing
Norton Systemworks (which caused the problem via WinDoctor) and deleting the
Upperfilters setting via regedit (listed elsewhere) The problem turned out to
be aHead InCD, which allowed my CD-R/W to operate like a big floppy drive.
After I removed it everything worked fine, except I can no longer re-install
it without having the problem come back. And this is after having it work
perfectly for 2 years (AS long as I've had this computer). I dumped
Systemworks and went with just anti-virus.

Are you using InCD that came with Nero Express 6.6?
