I can not play movies in Power Point (2000) althought
they play in Windows (XP) Media Player. When I insert
movie (in .avi format) the beginning screen appears in
the Power Point window however when played a white box
appears. Is this because of the video codec? (Cinepak?
Lead? - I bought the lead encoder it does work with WMP
but not within Power point. How can I work with it?

It's probably a codec, yes. The acid test is Windows MCI Media Player,
though, not Windows Media Player. That's explained in the info at the
link.
