I have two computers connected together with a crossover cable, and am trying
to remote log into on from the other. I am not able ping one computer from
another. When I try to remote log into the pc I get get computer not found,
using both its IP address or computer name. I am able to file share and the
connection status is good, Using xp service pack 2 on one machine, service
pack 3 on another. Default gateway and subnet masks are set the same on both
computers, IP addresses are different, thanks?

If you can share files then this must be a firewall problem.

thanks for the reply, I turned off the firewall on both computers under the
control panel/change windows firewall settings/ windows firewall still did
not seem to work, but possibly there is something I am missing. I did not do
anything with a domain name but did set the workgroup name the same on both
machines.

Domain names / workgroup names are totally irrelevant when it comes to
pinging. What counts are IP addresses and firewalls, especially third-party
firewalls, and operating systems. I recommend you post the following:
- Operating system on PC-1
- Operating system on PC-2
- Complete output from the command ipconfig.exe /all (PC-1)
- Complete output from the command ipconfig.exe /all (PC-2)
Do you have a router or a switch on your network?

thanks for the quick reply. There is no router or switch, just a crossover
cable. PC 1 is running windows xp service pack 3 and pc 2 (the one I want to
remote log into) is running windows xp service pack 2. I am not at the
machines now but should be later today so can post the output of the ipconfig
on both machines as suggested.

You're right, but only if he pinged using the other PC's IP address.
If he pinged using the other PC's name then that would be unknown hence not
found.

With the same Workgroup name on both, re-start both, then run Start-My
Netowrk Places.

Click on View Workgroup Computers in the left pane & see if the 2nd pc is
displayed.

thanks for the additional information. I got it working by setting the
subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Set the default gateway and subnet mask the
same on both machines. I think the number I was using before may have
possibly been blocking the port.

This is why you must always post the output of ipconfig.exe /all when you
have a problem with your network connectivity.
