Your PC must be at least SP1 or SP2 level as SP3 will not
install on XP Gold.

I would also create an "Image Backup" of my drive prior
to installing SP3 just in case you do have problems.
Don't have any Image Backup software:
Try "True Image" (has a 15 day trial version available)
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing...cts/trueimage/

If you use Zone Alarm Firewall (Free or Paid) then update to
version 7.0.483.
Warning do not install ZA version 8.0.xxx as it currently has
problems.

Install SP3 in 'Clean Boot' mode:

Not sure why, I've been using SP3 and Zone Alarm 8.0 for months and have
no issue what so ever.

ZA has revised the product several times recently,
but some users may not be aware of the latest updates
for ZA. I guess I should remove the ZA warning in my
post and change it to read: Obtain the latest ZA update
before installing SP3.

If I may ask what version are you using?

Thanks Bear!

There were a number of well-documented problems (mostly in the ZA forums)
with ZA 8.0.015. Most had to do with shut down in XP taking up to 5 minutes.
There were a few other problems, too, but nothing major. I have XP Home,
SP3, and ZA 8.0.059. I had a problem shortly after updating to .059, but a
clean install instead an upgrade install fixed it. I was running one the 7.0
revisions when I installed SP3 and it went without a hitch on my machine.
Didn't have to get any hotfixes or anything that I can recall in order to
install it.

All the posters seem to be right about tech support, though. If MS is
called, then it's ZA's fault. If ZA is called, then it's MS's fault. Lots of
finger pointing going on, that's for sure. Almost like being in one of the
Ford news groups ;-)
