Would be most appreciative for any response or guidance.
I am running XP pro as an administrator and finally got
around to installing FP2002. Updated to SP3. Ready for
first Home page, followed help tutorial and can not
authenticate to homepage, Repeatedly get new pop-up
window requesting user name and password. I can get in
through Command Prompt and FTP. So name and password as
well as site is verified. Also, I can authenticate if I
use: ftp://home.mytown.rr.com/myname inside FP but not
http://home.mytown.rr.com/myname Am I doing something
wrong? Thank you in advance.

Is http://home.mytown.rr.com/myname a root web w/ the FP SE or an alias your host uses for ftp
- if so you need the real URL of the site w/ the FP SE from you host
Try browsing your site in IE and trying File Edit w/ FP to see if it opens in FP

Thank you for your timely response Stefan. I am
not sure exactly what you mean by root web, but I would
assume it to be the root page assigned to me by my ISP,
Roadrunner. So then yes ,
http://home.roadrunner.tb.com/myname would be my root
web page. I am also a little lost with your abbreviation
of SE.

As you suggested. I start Internet Explorer 6
(6.0.2800.1106, XPSP2) , and in the address bar, I type
http://home.roadrunner.tb.com/myname. I see a blank page
with the title "Index of myname" in the upper left.
Under that I see column fields titled Name, Last
Modified, Size, and description. I also see only one
item listed. Its name is Parent Directory and last
modified today at the time I opened this site. If I
click on the Parent Directory link, my browser is
directed to a page titled "TampaBay Road Runner User Home
Pages From this page, you can create and manage your
Personal Home page. For information about any area, go to
the "help" area and choose the section you need
assistance with. Enjoy!"

Returning to the original page
(http://home.roadrunner.tb.com/myname) , I click File,
Edit with MS FP, and FP starts up. Soon I get a pop-up
window asking for user name and password. I fill that in
correctly and click OK. The folder view opens with the
correct folder name. Shortly thereafter, I get a pop-up
error message window that reads "The specified File or
web does not exist".

All of this started as I followed the tutorials of
learning FP. They said Click file, new, Page or Web.
From the New Page or Web task Pane. From there, I
clicked Website Templates. In the new pop-up Window, I
selected One page Web, and in the new web location
window, I typed http://home.roadrunner.tb.com/myname. I
then clicked ok. It is at this point that I can no
longer proceed past the user name and password pop -up
window.

If you have any clues, I would be most grateful
Thanks again for your previous response,
Al

FP SE - FrontPage Server Extensions
(required to publish using http mode in FP)

http://home.roadrunner.tb.com/myname is not a page URL (a page needs a .htm file extension), it is a folder location
Looks like your host has not even provided a default home page (index.htm or default.htm)
- that's why you saw a directory listing when you went there in IE

Verify w/ your host that they support the FP SE and have them installed for your URL
