my windows is current and up to date with SP1. I went
back to my origingal XP CD and tried to add some
components. In one case I was told it could not find the
file. I was there. In the other case I was told to
insert SP1 update disk. I there any other way to add the
components from the internet?

In most cases components are already in your OS but not active. If you go into the add\remove programs in your control panel you will see an "add\remove windows components" button on the left side, click that and a window will open showing many components. When you click to highlight a component you can then click the details button and see what sub components are installed under the main component category. If you attempt to install the component and are then asked to install the CD do so. Your XP disk or OEM recovery disk should contain these compenents. If it doesn't then you need to get in touch with your OEM and find out where their hidden partition is with the info. The law clearly states that OEMs must provide a way\means to recover the system to the original shipped or supplied condition. This does not mean for them alone but for you. If they refuse to provide such service then a lawyer would be a good choice as you can't lose and will certainly make enough money to make it worth your time. Good luck.

Did you go to control panel---add/remove programs and try to add windows
components from there?
