You'll need to clarify exactly what you did and why.
You would never use import to transfer your data, but thank you once again for showing everyone why you shouldn't. Just open your Outlook data file in the new installation and follow the supported methods we post here every day for transferring Outlook data: http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm http://www.howto-outlook.com/Howto/backupandrestore.htm http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...771141033.aspx -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Joe" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:8C01FE0E-FE08-4461-9FAD-(E-Mail Removed)... >I copied my outlook file to another physical drive when I cleaned up my c > drive and reinstalled my windows. I tried opening it in my new Outlook installation. It will not open. I
can't even copy the file to another directory or stick. The only thing I can do is look at the properties. Nothing is checked that would prevent any type of access that I can see. Ball is still in your court. We cannot answer a question when you provide no
information. You must provide every step you used to create and transfer this file, how you are trying to access it, and exactly what happens when you try. Include the precise content of all error messages. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Joe" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:1E09C8D5-D91C-47CD-B4D0-(E-Mail Removed)... >I tried opening it in my new Outlook installation. I was preparing to wipe my C drive and reinstall everything cause everything
was slowing down too much and a couple of programs weren't responding correctly and shutting themselves down. I copied all my documents to my SATA drive and copied my PST file to the SATA drive also. My C is an IDE. After I copied these files over (I've done this several times in the past 18 years and never had this problem), I inserted my XP CD and booted from that. Deleted the partition on C. Reinstalled the partition, formated and reinstalled XP. Then I reinstalled Office. I went to the drive with my copied files on in. All the files from My Documents copied back over with no problem. When I tried to copy the Outlook.pst file back to it's directory it would not let me. I checked the properties and nothing there is preventing me from doing it. I tried to copy it to a cd and it wouldn't let me copy that either. I shut down, disconnected my SATA and rebooted. Shut down again, reconnected the SATA. Turned back on and SATA was detected with no problem. Still would not copy back to Outlook folder. I've tried several demos to restore the Outlook file if it was corrupted. These demos were unable to access the file. The file will not let me or any program I've tried access it. It keeps giving me "Can not access outlook: Access is denied" and under that Make sure file is not write protected or disk is full or file is not currently in use. Thanks for you help "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: > Ball is still in your court. We cannot answer a question when you provide no > information. Need more clarification on this part:
"All the files from My Documents copied back over with no problem. When I tried to copy the Outlook.pst file back to it's directory it would not let me." First of all, you should never copy a PST file back to its default directory because you will likely overwrite the PST file that Outlook creates when you install it. That will corrupt your Outlook profile. "would not let me" means what, exactly? What happened when you tried? Why would you use "demos" to restore the file instead of Outlook's repair tool? -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Joe" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:40EFDBDF-B4A9-4386-8488-(E-Mail Removed)... >I was preparing to wipe my C drive and reinstall everything cause >everything > was slowing down too much and a couple of programs weren't responding > correctly and shutting themselves down. I don't mean literally copy the Outlook file. I import the PST through
import file and everything gets copied over. The My Document files all copied back to where I wanted them. I used full version demo to try to repair the outlook file because outlook repair tool didn't work either. The file will not allow any access to it. I've tried opening the file in outlook. It says I don't have the proper
permissions to open the file. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote: > Then your question was answered in my first post. I went to where the data file was created and dragged and copied to another
drive. I have made sure the read only attribute is not marked. I've done this a dozen times. After I wipe my drive and reinstall all my programs I've alway imported the contents of the copied file and have never had a problem. I can't even drag and drop it in another folder on the same drive or a different drive.
