A friend of mine had a conversation with someone who was using my IM name. I
didn't believe her so she sent me the message log. Well sure enough there was
my IM name chatting with her, but it wasn't me. What I would like to know is
there anything I need to do to prevent this from happing again?

be careful that there isn't anything on your computer that logs your passwords. Scan with a spyware, trojan and virus scanner. Change your password to something more long and complicated, with many different characters including * or _ or !, $, . ; and something.
