I don't know if it is possible to connect Windows Messenger to a gatekeeper (for Videocalls) somewhat like Netmeeting. I would very much appreciate a pointer or two in the direction I should be looking to find out the answer

Unfortunately no, Windows Messenger (5) can only connect to the .NET Messenger network, a
SIP-based communications service (like Live Communications Server), or an Exchange Instant
Messaging server.
