I can buy a two year old Compaq, 40 gig, with ME for $100. It runs fine,
except for all the crap software that needs to be cleaned-up. I don't know
anything about ME compatibility, though, with current software and the XP
market. What are the issues? Is it possible and easiest to simply upgrade
to XP?

What kind of hardware is in the machine? As long as it's up to scratch then
it is upgradeable, assuming you have a retail copy of Windows XP (can't
upgrade from an OEM disc - you'd have to clean install).

Windows ME can be upgraded to XP.
You may download Upgrade Advisor tool-it checks your system hardware and
software to see if it is ready for upgrade to Windows XP.

Well, the person I'm buying it from took it from the shelf of a retailer so
it's the original installation. I don't think she has the software discs,
though. All I'm getting is the machine and the cables.

FIRST.. go to this website and check that your system can handle XP..

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...g/advisor.mspx ..

Assuming that your system passes, think about upgrading memory to 512mb if
it isn't already..

All that is left to do then is to go buy a copy..

Good luck

Why you would want to upgrade another individual's installation of ME to XP
is a mystery. You want a fresh install of XP even if the previous owner is a
friend.
Is the question "can the hardware support XP?" If so, then 40 gig was the
last thing we need to know. Processor speed and RAM are paramount. However,
virtually all computers produced over the last 2 years should ably support
XP (I think your computer may be a bit older than 2 years).
Buy the OEM version of XP. You will not get any customer support with it,
but you will save money. Keep in mind that it requires activation, and that
should you ever need to put the XP on another computer, you should do so 120
days or more after the last activation to avoid problems in activating on a
new computer. Also, the OEM version of XP comes with a unique Product Key on
a sticker. Do not lose it! The unique sticker is what you are paying the
money for.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

HOW TO Prepare to Upgrade Win98 or WinMe
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q316639

Upgrading to Windows XP
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

Rather the repeat myself by typing the same thing, please refer to
ANOTHER of my posts on how I personally feel about upgrading to XP, I
think this will pretty much apply to your situation too.

You could have copied it out of there and pasted it into here, unless of
course you had some ulterior motive for redirecting people to that forum..
