I have the Media Center Remote keyboard, which runs fine in MC itself (except
for teh mouse, it seems to be inactive all the time...). Unfortunately, as
soon as I get out of MC and back into "normal XP", the keyboard does not
respond anymore and I need to switch to the plain old wired keyboard and
mouse. This is annoying because I was planning to use the remote keyboard
from the couch on the large screen TV. Is there a way to get it to work ALL
the time, like a normal keyboard, and not just like a "remote with a
keyboard"?

The Remote Keyboard has drivers that only install in Windows XP Media Center
Edition.
As a result, the Remote Keyboard for MCE only works and is only supported in
Windows XP Media Center Edition.

I suppose you could try to hack it into the non-MCE sku's, but I haven't
heard of anyone actually getting it to work.
