Is there a way to HIDE desktop icons similar to a taskbar that will pop up
once I put the mouse pointer there?

This could be considered close:

Right-click the Desktop, hover over "Arrange Icons by", click "Show
Desktop Icons". That will hide them. Then right-click the Taskbar,
click Toolbars, Desktop. Now, when you click the ">>" to the right of
"Desktop", you'll get a list of the hidden shortcuts.

No.

But if your intent is simply to have a less-cluttered desktop, you
might want to consider taking all those icons off the desktop and
putting them into a folder, then putting a shortcut to that folder on
the desktop. That would keep the desktop free of almost everything,
and let you get the icons when you double-clicked that single icon for
the folder.

Sure if it is XP or earlier You can make an extra quicklunch/Toolbar
and have it on another edge of the screen.

This is how:

Put the Icons that You dont want on the desktop into a folder
e.g. D:\ToolBars\Tools

Then RightClick on the QuickLunch and chose Toolbars->New ToolBar
Select the folder with the Icons.

Now You get an extra Toolbar in the Taskbar Drag this toolbar to
the desktop and drop it.

Now You have a special folder window, drag this window to the edge
of the screen and You will see that it dock's to the edge of the screen.

Now You can RightClick on this new toolbar and set it up as You please
large icons, Auto hide, etc....

Kind regards
Asger

Very nice! I took it a step farther....
I dragged the toolbar off the Taskbar and dropped it at the top of my
desktop. Then I selected "no text", "no Title", and "autohide".
To get the toolbar I just navigate my mouse to the top edge of my screen.
Kinda MACish.
