How can I log on as Administrator to fix "cannot access" problem?

I am trying to help my daughter who has had problems with her computer ever
since a Windows update a few weeks ago. This problem appears similar to
others listed recently but the solutions all talk about logging on with
administrator access and I don't know how to do that in the current
circumstances! To explain:-

When she tries to run a program she gets the message "Windows cannot access
the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item"

She can run some programs by right-clicking and selecting the Run As option
and then selecting Administrator and typing in her password (the same
password she uses when she logs in as herself). She did have Computer
Administrator access but now cannot get to User Accounts to see what access
she now has or change it! It does suggest that her profile has been
corrupted as discussed in other posts.

When she logs on there is no Administrator option on the dropdown, so my
questions are:-

1. How can we log on as an Administrator to try and fix this problem? and
2. Is the best solution - when we can log on - to delete the profile, and if
so how do we do it?

I do hope someone can help as she is a long distance away from me and I'm
having to try and help her over the telephone!

Pam

You need to Log in in Safe Mode. Keep pressing the F8 key during
Start-Up and select
option - Safe Mode.

Try creating a new User Profile.

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

Hi Gerry
Just to let you know it worked! In fact what we did when we got to Safe
Mode was go to System Restore and return to a point 7 days before the Windows
Update that we suspected had caused the problem, and that worked perfectly!
Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.

Hi PamW,

If it happens again, you can also try:
User: Administrator
Password:
and then enter.

By doing it this way, you don't loose any changes when you choose restore
point.

ave

Soepardi

p.s.
The password is blanc
