How can I limit size of word files when using Endnote 8?

I am using Word 2003 and Endnote 8 software. My word file becomes huge,
making Word very slow. The word file becomes very small when saving the
Endnote references as text only - but then I cannot edit them anymore. Is
there anyway of limiting the word file size ?
